The Interpreter

It's good. go watch it. Nicole Kidman - what can i say, she's so classy ~ she acts so beautifully! Sean Penn - I love him (not quite the way I love Johny Depp) but love him, yeah! there have been many conspiracy - killing based movies. Also been movies about the African countries with genocide and what not. This movie was not so gory and disturbing as some others I have watched. There's no preaching *thank god* on the whole, nicely packaged. good to watch as you rewind after a confused day! *karizma smiles again*
p/s An interpreter at the United Nations General Assembly. Interesting career choice, wot say?

I was wondering how this movie would be, but I, unlike yourslef, like the "disturbing" type film. The reality of the UN and their a) need for a major re-org and b) lack of real power, is infuriating at best. Some of us, who believe in a global community, the influence of mass media and the awful turn-a-blind-eye attitude of most westerners, like to see more films (as opposed to movies) that address these things. Would you classify this film in the same vein as a "movie" (read: hollywood) or a "film"?

if you're looking for a movie with a message, something that's going to shake you up and leaves you thinking deeply at the end of it, The Interpreter isnt it. It doesn't deal with the real "issues", nor looks into the lack of power of the UN. Honestly, the focus is more on the two main characters, the Interpreter, Kidman with a dark past in Africa and the Secret Service Officer, Penn who's nursing wounds from the recent death of his wife. From suspecting a hoax by the Interpreter to finally believing her story and trying to get to the bottom of issues, the movie banks on the emotional aspects, rather than any gory details of the genocide or any facts of the UN action since. The actors have put in a good performances. As such I feel the movie strongly conveys the American anti - dictatorial stand, closely comparing with the Robert Mugabe story from Zimbabwe. A review on IMDB summarized - "this is a high budget movie about the complexities of international politics combined with the seedy, underworld of the secret service attempting to protect a pretty blonde determined to punish her parent's killer". Pretty perfect i think. I'd say this is more of a movie than a classic film. I enjoyed it nevertheless =)
