How can you lose something you never had?

Today I found out something I was only suspecting so far. A smile, a single look gave it all away. And suddenly I felt like a complete fool. Why did I not see this coming? The random phone calls, the birthday presents, the wedding invitations - all the clues were right there, and yet somehow I just didn't see this coming. Why? I feel so heartbroken now.
